What is a CO2 sensor controller / monitor?

The first CO2 measuring device in Japan that we are continuing to develop is the “CO2 sensor controller / monitor”. The “CO2 sensor controller” measures the CO2 concentration indoor and informs you of the CO2 level so that you can spend a comfortable and energy-saving living space. In recent years, in highly airtight buildings, the health hazard caused by indoor CO2 concentration is becoming a problem.

Why do we need to control CO2?

Being in a space with high CO2 concentration for a long time may cause health problems.

As shown in the figure below, it is said that when the indoor CO2 concentration increases, it gradually affects the human body. The recommended value set by the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers is 1000ppm or less. It has been pointed out that exceeding this standard value may cause drowsiness and discomfort.

Also, in Japan, the following standards are set for the CO2 concentration in the living space, and from the viewpoint of legal compliance, it is necessary to adjust the indoor CO2 concentration so that it does not exceed 1000 ppm.

On the other hand, it does not mean that the CO2 concentration in the room should be low. The reason is that the lower the CO2 concentration in the room, the more outside air is taken in. As a result, the air conditioning load increases in summer and winter, which is far from energy saving. For example, if the ventilation system is operated more than necessary on a hot summer day, a large amount of hot outside air will be taken into the room. Although the CO2 concentration decreases, but the temperature indoor will rise. As a consequence of keeping the room temperature constant, the air conditioner has to operate at full capacity automatically and electricity cost soars significantly.

In a nutshell, as mentioned above, keeping the indoor CO2 concentration at an appropriate level (800ppm to 1000ppm) is necessary for an energy-saving and comfortable indoor space.

External output function of CO2 sensor controller (relay, analog, digital)

The CO2 sensor controller does more than just measure and display the CO2 concentration in the room. When the measured value exceeds the specified amount, the relay function is activated to control the externally connected device.

As shown in the above figure, by operating the ventilation equipment (such as ventilation fan, total heat exchanger, and etc.) connected to the controller, it is possible to adjust the CO2 concentration in the room and activate the alarm. With data logger function, by inserting a Micro-SD card into our products, you can also record changes in CO2 concentration, temperature, and humidity for varied analytical purposes.
In addition, the analog output (4-20mA, 0-10V) enables proportional control of VAV and data transmission / recording to the central monitoring room. Furthermore, it is also possible to transmit and record data in sequence by digital output such as RS232C and Modbus (RS485).

In short, by introducing a “CO2 sensor / controller / monitor”, it is possible to prevent health hazards and to spend your time in an energy-saving and comfortable environment.
